Why did you become a board member of Lawlink?
One of my colleagues, Warwick Deuchrass, was Chair of Lawlink for many years. I was interested in becoming involved in governance generally and valued the benefits that Lawlink delivered to Anderson Lloyd. When Warwick decided to step down, I saw an opportunity to gain governance experience and to help shape the future of Lawlink – to ensure it continues to deliver great commercial value to member firms and their clients going forward.
What value does Lawlink add to its member firms, staff within those firms, and clients of those firms?
There’s a key collegiate aspect that’s unique to Lawlink firms. Members have open discussions about strategic issues and share information, know-how and resources. This is invaluable and means that firms can learn from one-another’s experience, reducing the learning curve and the cost of undertaking projects.
The buying power of Lawlink is a key benefit, particularly the PI insurance, as is the precedents system. The precedents are often our lawyers’ first introduction to Lawlink and are extremely valuable. They’re robust and wide-ranging and as such are a great starting point for lawyers even when drafting the most unique document.
Another benefit is that staff are able to use other firms’ offices if travelling, and can refer clients to people in a particular town or city where needed.
There are indirect benefits to clients of member firms. Firstly, there are always people on the ground wherever they need them to be around New Zealand. Secondly, the precedents system means work can be done cost-effectively. Clients don’t pay for their lawyer to reinvent the wheel and, if they have an issue that needs specialist advice, they’ll get the benefit of accessing that specialist expertise.
Where do you see the future of Lawlink?
The future of Lawlink is continuing to deliver commercial value to member firms to ensure its relevance to future generations. There are three key areas in which I believe we need to focus our efforts:
- In areas of benefit to firms,
- Continuing to maintain and develop the precedents system, ensuring both existing documents are relevant and up-to-date as well as being alert to future requirements,
- Keeping on top of the changing times, being alert to issues and working with firms to tackle these together to ensure we remain ahead of the pack.
I’m excited about being involved in Lawlink and am looking forward to getting to know all the member firms for our mutual benefit.
